heading  Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is an operation performed by the Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, David P. Rapaport, MD to try to get back the shape of the breast after a mastectomy (removal of a breast), or lumpectomy (removal of part of the breast).

The goal of breast reconstruction is to match the remaining natural breast as closely as possible. This can either be accomplished by creating a breast 'form' with a breast implant, which is put underneath the skin and muscle that covers your chest, or by using skin, fat (and sometimes muscle) from another part of your body. A combination of these techniques is used for some women.

What is the importance of Federal Legislation in 1998 for women's health?  All insurance companies have to cover breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. All insurance companies also must to cover procedures on the opposite breast to obtain symmetry, including reduction, augmentation and mastopexy. Recently, situations have risen where coverage for opposite-breast surgery after lumpectomy may be denied by insurance companies.  If this is your case, the NYC Board Certified Plastic Surgeon will discuss this with you.  The Manhattan Plastic Surgeon finds these procedures very rewarding and is requested by patient's around the world to work with their surgeon to perform the breast augmentation (breast implants) procedure in order to get the most natural looking breast augmentation (breast implants) results.  Please follow this link to learn more about the Federal Legislation act of 1998 for women's health: breast reconstruction.

The Manhattan Plastic Surgeon will advise you on the type of breast reconstruction that is most suitable for you. It will depend on:

the amount of breast tissue that has been removed
the healthiness of the tissue at the planned operation site
whether or not you have had radiotherapy to the area of the breast or chest  wall
your general health and body build
your wishes and lifestyle

It is possible to create a new nipple and this is usually done as a separate operation once the reconstructed breast has settled into its final shape. However, this does not have to be done unless you wish.

Why Consider Breast Reconstruction?

you will not have to wear an external artificial breast (prosthesis)
in clothes (or underwear, or a swimming costume), your appearance will be similar to before your surgery
without clothes, you may feel better with a recreated breast giving you a more natural shape
breast reconstruction can help to restore your self-confidence and feelings of femininity, attractiveness and sexuality
breast reconstruction does not restrict any later treatments that might be necessary. It does not interfere with radiotherapy, chemotherapy or hormonal therapy. Scans and x-rays of the breast area are still possible and if the cancer comes back in the breast area, this can still be detected.
